A romance for the year we fell into screens. And reality of that unreality became so intimate that we forgot what it felt like to fall into eyes. To see the poetry in the most mundane messages - and not read between the lines. So when you find something that feels real, this is a reminder to hold tight to it and don’t let go. Even when hands get slippery. Dripping with fear and consequence. Because when we come back to each other in spite of all that is. We fall honestly.
As part of the formative experience design for Galway 2020 we were approached to create a space that added value and helped facilitate the discussions to the solutions to the community.

It provides a launching platform for a community that have interest in making a contribution in their specialty field, keep creatively active and give more visibility to the bid.

We intend to create an ideas exchange platform and bring into light emerging talents. When applied to concrete needs, by the mediation of context and content, the space demonstrated a high degree of expression and creativity in fulfilling the requirements, in accordance with the specific design guidelines here presented.
Make Galway Better from Design Network on Vimeo.

How Can We Make Galway Better? is the open question this project asks us all. The answer can be found in the way we express our thoughts and build on each others’ ideas. The documentation of this process allows our community to keep our cultural identity evolving and inclusive. This interactive installation promotes public participation while altering the perception of graffiti and this derelict building.

This project aims to achieve multiple outcomes – allowing full public participation in the cultural direction of our city, providing a chance for community members to connect, while altering the perception of a derelict building by creating a new purpose for it.

The public are asked to engage in this large scale project that returns to the simplicity of design sessions that tease out ideas, are constantly evolving and are inherently inclusive. The question How Can We Make Galway a Better Place? is posed on a daily basis, with a large whiteboard canvas for sharing and recording our ideas. Markers will be provided and volunteers present, and people of all ages are encouraged to participate.

Daily timelapse images will capture the changing nature of the answers and how they change over time. This project provides a chance to connect people within a city whose paths would otherwise not cross; it breaks down barriers of age and social background, and provides a forum for building on each others’ ideas, making Galway a better place through this inclusive connection.

This is a Design Network West project in collaboration with students from Film and Documentary at GMIT and student from GTI, and is backed by Galway 2020.

TRXMP from Kimmy Bartle on Vimeo.
I’m fascinated by the aesthetic protest. The subversion of form as a means of popular uprising can be such a potent weapon in the struggle and the distillation of an entire movement as shown in Shepard Fairy’s ‘HOPE’ poster which came to symbolise the wave in which carried Obama to the presidency. Redacting of text a tool of secrecy used by governments to control the flow of information released has long been used as a device to suppress information, I wanted to take this aesthetic symbolism and use it in a different context as a means of protest. What I’ve created is an auto-redacting font, that will remove the mention of Donald Trump from you life. Trump acts out for attention and like dealing bold child our response should be this: Ignore him, Isolate him and go on with your life. The near constant inundation of bad news stories from muslim bans and healthcare removal proposed by Trump can have an adverse effect on our mental health and just the mention of his name can send you in a negative spiral, so cut him out, deDonald, redact Trump.
The Galway Gin Company based in the Ancient Maritime City of Galway on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic West Coast has created a unique gastronomic gin, the primary botanical of which is Dilleasc. Distilled in small batches, it is the first Gin to be distilled in Galway, a city and county with a great distilling heritage.

The brand we wanted to create was modern and is deceptive in its simplicity. The kern and spacing on the type was a painstaking task. The grid and natural spacing was abandoned to make it work. Neue Haas Grotesk was redrawn to alter widths to help with the balance.

The bottle we chose had clean lines and felt ergonomically right. The modern shape of the bottle complements the letterpress printed label and when teamed with the wooden stopper it gives a feel of the artisan nature of the product while still maintaining the luxury of this high-value product.

The labels were printed on a raw woven paper that has a soft texture and when paired with the beautiful blue foil ink which is raised and smooth to the touch it gives the product a superior quality.

The type system was featured in the Encyclopaedia of Type Faces by W. Turner Berry. Based on twenty interchangeable forms, the type is tall and clean with a condensed form.

This film – Desired brings to life the essence in the food pornography and physicalizes it in an inmate erotic fetish film. Lost in time and movement the montage of body and flesh intertwine to create a visceral experience that transcends the sum of its parts to create a journey into self-expression and illuminates the narrative function of food chemistry that exists it between bodily forms.

Desired was a group show by the participants of 72U. 72u is 12-week creative residency focused on personal and professional growth through collaboration and experimentation. 72U is comprised of 6-7 multidisciplinary individuals who experiment at the intersection of art, culture and technology. The program is an iterative process and each session is redesigned based on the team’s unique interests, skill sets and current cultural landscape.

The avocado. A prehistoric, one-seeded berry named for its resemblance to testicles. Once a rare luxury, consumption has grown nearly 200 percent in the past decade - Los Angeles alone eats more than 3 million a year. And there are few foods that are as thoughtfully fetishized and thoroughly hash-tagged as the avocado.

So what is it about this homely Mexican import that has our culture by the balls? Desired explores the secret life of today’s it-fruit, asking how the avocado’s rise to celebrity is representative of a culture where just about anything can achieve cult status.
